The Worst Medical Advice Ever Given

By: Natasha D. Ashton

You have heard it time and time again, “stay out of the sun!” The medical community has successfully launched a campaign to educate the world about the harmful effects of sun exposure and we accepted it, no questions asked. The campaign was so successful that entire industries were created to help us protect our bodies against the harmful effects of direct sun exposure. Everything from lotions and sprays to block our skin from the sun, to sunglasses with increasingly protective ultra violet protection were all designed to feed this fear of the sun’s rays. Did we ever think about what we were losing by significantly reducing our sun exposure?  Did we ever imagine that we were being given the worst medical advice ever?

The question has been asked by John J. Cannell M.D. in his new book, “Autism Causes: Prevention and Treatment.” As a mother of child on the autism spectrum, I was mostly interested in his views of how our lack of sun exposure may have caused autism numbers to explode over the past few decades.

Over the years, I followed the recommendations that were given about sun exposure. I limited my exposure to sun light, wore the strongest UV protection sunscreen that I could find if I had to be in the sun for an extended period of time. After having discovered that my son was on the autism spectrum and having no family history of Autism, I became concerned that there was something more to this than just genetics. I studied the vaccination theory and staggered the vaccine schedules of my other three children just in case the vaccines were the cause. However, I was never able to conclude that vaccines were the culprit. There had to be something else.

I do believe that God created all things for a reason. About four months before I was given Dr. Cannell’s book, my doctor diagnosed me with Vitamin D deficiency. Apparently a normal person should have a Vitamin D level between 30 and 100. I had a level of 11.8. That was obviously a problem. After being prescribed 10,000mgs of Vitamin D weekly for 10 weeks, I am now on round two. I experienced a little improvement during the first round but I still have not reached the 30 mark. The difference between the first round and the second is that I am now taking heed of Dr. Cannell’s advice and am definitely soaking up the sun, in moderation of course, so that my body can once again function as designed. I am allowing my body to create this essential vitamin that my fear of skin cancer took away. I am now taking evening walks and playing outside with all of my children.  The results were immediate. I am not as tired as I use to be. I am sleeping better at night and so are the kids. The most amazing outcome of all of this is that my autistic sun continues to blossom into a normal kid. His speech continues to improve; he is initiating play with other children his own age; he understands so much more than he ever did. Most of all, he is really becoming a happy kid, instead of a kid trapped by Autism.

I cannot fully state that Dr. Cannell’s Vitamin D theory is the only reason for an improvement in my health and the life of my autistic son. What I can conclude is that this is an area that needs further consideration. God created the sun for a reason and our bodies are designed to naturally protect us from disease. If man has successfully evolved for over 2,000 years, in harmony with the star that we call “Sun” and the elements emitted from it, we have to conclude that there will be consequences from significantly limiting our body’s exposure to these elements.

Dr. John Cannell’s Book “Autism Causes: Prevention and Treatment.” is available at www.amazon.com .  Dr. Cannell, Founder of the Vitamin D Council and Autism research give us food for thought in this comprehensive and compelling explanation to date regarding the causes, prevention strategies, and treatment protocols that, in many cases, reverse autistic symptoms. Dr.  Cannell, MD, through decades of research, explains the relationship between high doses of vitamin D in the treatment and prevention of Autism.
