The Sisters Network – Orlando Chapter

The Sisters Network Orlando Chapter packs a big punch when it comes to educating the community and assisting women that have been diagnosed with Cancer. EM attended an educational session and we were blown away with the energy in the room and excited to learn about the strides that have been made in cancer research and health management, even when the diagnosis has reached the Stage 4 level. The Sisters Network, with chapters throughout the United States is committed to increasing local and national attention to the devastating impact that breast cancer has in the African American community.

Sisters Network 3Dr. Rebecca Maroose, of Orlando Health, whose area of expertise is Breast Cancer was the main speaker at this event. When it comes to “tell it to me in layman’s terms” the Dr. is the one to go to. Yes, there were charts and diagrams, but they all made sense to those of us with only the basic knowledge of Cancer.

DID YOU KNOW THAT: Cancer hides from the immune system. Cancer progression is aided by the ability of tumors to evade recognition by suppressing the body’s “anti-tumor immune response”. Researchers have identified a mechanism by which tumors escape detection. They are also finding ways to enhance the signaling device that sends the message to the tumor associated immune cells to release the tumor antigens needed to begin the internal fight against cancer.

Breast Cancer is harder to detect in the young due to the density of the Breast as opposed to older women whose breast have more fat. 10% of cancer occurs as a result of inheriting the gene. Whereas 12 percent of women in the general population will develop breast cancer by age 80, those carrying a harmful developing breast cancer. Predictive Genomics is a method that is being used to offer those with a family history of cancer pre-emptive healthcare in the form of screening, early detection, testing and developing strategies to prevent cancer.

Your DNA gives information about how certain medicines will be received by your body. Genomic testing allows your doctor to evaluate your DNA and make decisions regarding the medicines that will work best with your genetic makeup. In the case of Breast Cancer, for example, your doctor can tell if your body will respond better to Chemotherapy versus Hormone Therapies.

The Sisters Network offers hope, education, and a network of like-minded ladies with one goal in mind.
