Shepherd’s Hope Prescribes Compassion for Uninsured PatientsShepherd's Hope 2

In 1996, Dr. William S. Barnes, Lead Pastor of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, was concerned that individuals and families within his community were in need of medical care and services but because of circumstances were unable to afford it or were uninsured. Conferring with local healthcare and business leaders, they created the basis for an approach that weaved together volunteer doctors, nurses, lay individuals, hospitals, and multi-faith congregations to deliver free primary medical services. On Valentine’s Day, 1997, the Shepherd’s Hope Health Center saw its first patient at donated space in West Orange County. She had cancer, was treated and returned as a volunteer. At the end of that first year, 304 patients received free primary medical services. It was something extraordinary that had never been accomplished in the community. Nineteen years later, Shepherd’s Hope has evolved to five free standing health centers that cumulatively have provided over 221,000 free, primary care and specialty care patient visits and medical services to uninsured men, women and children across Central Florida. In 2015 alone, 16,300 patient visits and medical services were provided to individuals who otherwise might have gone without medical treatment or appeared in local area hospital emergency departments.

For every patient seen in one of the five Shepherd’s Hope health centers, an elaborate combination of resources work together and provide free, essential primary and secondary/specialty medical care to the underserved and uninsured. Uniquely organized, this innovative healthcare model synchronizes and leverages a tightly woven consortium of 2,200 licensed medical and general professionals (operating under the Florida Department of Health’s Volunteer Healthcare Provider Program), 4 community hospital systems (Florida Hospital, Orlando Health, Nemours Children’s Hospital and Central Florida Regional), 100 diagnostic/surgical providers and 23 multi-faith partners creating a beautiful centrism today that has Central Florida’s own Shepherd’s Hope regarded nationally as an exemplary model of health care.

Today, 19 years after its founding, Shepherd’s Hope remains committed to its mission and to bridging the expanding coverage gap to high quality healthcare while mitigating the tremendous financial implications to the community and other healthcare providers. No other model in Florida has a multi-site, multi-faith intricate system of primary and secondary disciplines in place to provide the delivery of high-quality, compassionate patient-centered care to this medically underserved and uninsured in our community.

Find Your Moment To Get Involved

 Volunteer

Shepherd’s Hope depends on volunteer physicians, nurses, other Licensed Health Care Professionals and general volunteers to provide quality health care for men, women and children who would otherwise go without the care they need and deserve.

Shepherd’s Hope volunteers are categorized as either a general volunteer or licensed health care provider. Licensed health care providers provide direct health care to patients and general volunteers give of their time in supporting and furthering the health center’s mission without providing direct health care.  Our volunteers are the key to Shepherd’s Hope success, so whether you serve once a month or once a week, your time has a meaningful and significant impact.
