Low “T”  It’s Not All About Sex

by Elena Kunneke

The “T” is short for testosterone. Testosterone is the male equivalent of estrogen.  It is the primary sex hormone in men that gives them their deep voice, muscles and healthy bone mass.  When the testosterone levels drop in males, it can bring on similar symptoms for men that menopause brings on for women.  According to WebMD, as testosterone levels fall, the bones may get thinner, weaker, and more likely to break. A decrease in testosterone levels does not always mean loss of the sex drive but could mean difficulty keeping an erection. By the way, women also have testosterone made by the ovaries in their system.

Symptoms of low testosterone:

  • weakness
  • fatigue
  • lower sex drive
  • depression

Do not assume you have low testosterone if you have these symptoms because these symptoms are also a sign of diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. The best way to know for sure is to speak to your primary doctor. Doctors will order specific blood tests to diagnose the problem. Medications and genetics can also affect a man’s testosterone levels.High testosterone can also be a problem as it is often associated with the committing of criminal effects and antisocial behavior. Of course people with normal or low testosterone also get into trouble so having high testosterone does not mean that one is or will be a criminal. We hope that this information motivates you to get the men in your lives thinking proactively instead of waiting until there is a problem. There is medication for clinically diagnosed low testosterone, and as always exercise and eating healthy are always integral in body function. According to the November 2014 issue of Men’s Health Magazine some fruits that can provide a boost consist of:

  • Grapes for more active sperm – the skin on the grape contains resveratrol which can make for hardier sperm.
  • Avocadoes – to lower the LDL cholesterol and unclog the pipes that lead to the male plumbing
  • Honey – not for the honey but taken by the teaspoon can boost nitric oxide levels in the blood thus opening up blood vessels for increased circulation.
  • Cabbage – 500 mg taken daily demonstrated to aid in reducing the body’s female hormones per a study done at Rockefeller University thus boosting the “T.”

Getting enough sleep, keeping a healthy weight and staying active is the RX for all of us EALON Men and Women.
