SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
BETHUNE-GRILL
by Deborah Barrs Paul
The Bethune Grill has been a destination place in the beautiful city of Daytona Beach, Florida since 1997.
Ms. Audrey Hines, founded the restaurant with the intention of it becoming a family business to be passed down through the generations. Shannon “Shamp” Hines, her son, was integral in her decision to open the business. Her goal was give her family something of their own, and make sure that they, especially Shamp, would not have to worry about employment.
Ms. Hines who was a very good cook decided to open Bethune Grill. The restaurant specialized in wings and later added fish, shrimp, and pork chops to the menu along with various homemade desserts and ice tea. Shamp created his own special wing sauce that not only is served with the wings, but was such a hit that it is available for purchase at the restaurant.
Ms. Hines passed away in 2010. Shamp and sisters, Rosemary Jenkins and Terry Hines, continue to honor her name and her dream. The locals and visitors don’t mind standing in line for great fare. Bethune Grill is located one block from Bethune-Cookman University and is the hot spot for the students. Shamp makes sure that Bethune Grill gives back to the community by participating in various events.
Bethune Grill will be relocating to a larger facility in order to accommodate their growing customer base. The business currently has nine employees and is proud to contribute to the creation of new jobs in the community that will come with the expansion. The family’s goal is to start a Non-Profit Organization that will benefit those in a community that have supported the small business. Their spirit to serve honors their mother’s legacy.
Make it point to visit the next time you are in Daytona Beach, Florida. But get there early to avoid the line that sometimes wraps around the building.
