FINDING YOUR SONG

FINDING YOUR SONG

Desnee E. Young, CEO

“Hey Ladies! As I was sending an uplifting message to a coworker today with one of my power songs, I realized how for the past two years I haven’t truly sang. Today I found my song again!!!!!!!…….Courtney Latimore”

This quote has its roots in text messages. A group of women who shall remain nameless has a designated group text where they share all kinds of information. What’s happening in their communities, their families, jobs, spouses or significant others, lives in general. They wish each other great days, good mornings, happy birthdays and congratulations on achievements. Not an everyday thing, it’s turned out to be a great support system.

This particular text really resonated not only with me but with others in the group and we decided to share it with our EM Family because at one time or another we all lose our song.

No one knows exactly when it happens, and even though we might have an idea about why it happens, deep thought is not given until we wake up one day and we are singing again. We then replay in our heads all the things that led up to quieting our voices.

Almost every culture in the world sings as a form of expression. We sing when we are happy, we sing to celebrate, we sing when we are overcome with sadness and sometimes we sing just because we can. Singing is representative of who we are. The songs we sing identify the era in which we grew up and they also give insight to our values and belief systems.

As women our lives can become quite hectic. Between our jobs, children, husbands, partners, friends and family we are lucky if we see ourselves peeking out from under the crowd of responsibilities that take over our spirits. We start out with much conversation, plenty of songs and eventually find that we don’t have time or no longer want to sing and soon we stop. There is just no room or time to do so.

What has stopped you from singing? Quieted the beautiful songs that come from heartfelt moments in your life? If this has happened to you, take a step back and evaluate the things that are going on in your life and identify which of them has stolen your voice.   Take that thing and turn it on its sides. Pick it apart, figure out why it has affected you so and what you can do to make it a positive factor in your life; and if, in fact, there is even a place for it in your life.

I lost my song for about a year and did not even realize it was gone until one day I woke up and was singing one of my favorite hymns.   I then realized that I had not been singing and the thought of it saddened me. I realized that stress among other things had silenced me. I was immediately thankful that my heart was once again full.

Before you lose your song, take the time to evaluate where you are mentally, physically, professionally and personally. Make sure that each area in your life is having a positive impact not only on you, but those around you and is working for you as you would have it. Change now and you will wake up to happiness. Change now and you will find your song.
