YES ITS LEGAL BUT…

YES ITS LEGAL BUT…

Marijuana is now legal in 23 states for medicinal purposes. Four States are “all in” and have legalized the drug for both recreational use and medicinal purposes, but you might want to check with your employer before you light up. Although it’s okay to smoke, employers still have rules and regulations that might land you on the unemployment line should you fail your drug test. Some things you should be aware of:

For the Novice – Marijuana metabolites can remain in the human body for weeks, so when you go for that drug test and it comes out positive forget about using the excuse “I smoked it on my off day(s). Your employer isn’t interested. The fact is that marijuana affects your mind and could affect your work. Tell your story walking. Marijuana use is still illegal under federal laws. According to the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, any workplace that receives federal funding or is subject to federal regulations requiring the testing of safety-sensitive workers must consider marijuana a prohibited substance.

Employers cannot discriminate against employees who test positive for marijuana when it’s prescribed by a physician, but can reprimand employees if they are impaired on the job due to drug use. Most smokers are very aware of how marijuana affects them. Some even admit that they should not go to the workplace high, others say it does not affect their productivity. Employers aren’t willing to risk their livelihoods by taking the chance. So ask yourself, is it worth yours?
