SPIRITUALITY

I AM

WHO ARE YOU?

By Desnee E. Young

In Exodus 3:14 Moses asks God “when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?  God’s response is “I AM THAT I AM.  Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”

This passage is critical to those on the search for spirituality? Why? Because in order to connect with our spirit, we have to know who we are.  God’s answer was simple, yet in it was a complete answer with no room for any other question, no need for contemplation, nor doubt as to who he is.

Have you taken the time to ask yourself who you really are? Have you examined yourself closely and are you able to satisfactorily answer the question “Who Am I”?  Beyond the boundaries of this world’s definition of you (i.e., father, mother, sister, brother, employee, etc.) how do you define yourself?

When you truly attempt to answer this question, you will find that you fall into a different category. One that is called spirit.  It is this spirit that will define how you act in the role of father, mother, sister, brother and every other role you now have or will have in this lifetime.

Is your spirit one of truth? Is it one of kindness? Is your spirit respectful or disrepectful? Is your spirit ruthless or unaccepting? Is your spirit loving? Acknowledging your spirit man is a critical step in your spiritual journey.  Why?  Because the journey is all about being truthful to yourself.  Before you can be an important factor in anyone else’s life, before you can take another step on the spiritual journey you have to be in touch with who you really are.  Many of us walk around and hide our spirit man because we are not pleased with who we really are.  The spiritual journey is about ridding yourself of the mask so that you can proudly embrace who you are.  Some of you may say I could never be proud of the things that I think or feel sometimes. When I look deep into my soul I do not see a good person.  This is why it is important to know this simple fact:  When you began to walk in the spirit, your spirit man changes and before you know it you are walking proudly because what people see reflected on the outside is the person you really are on the inside.  You are now walking in truth.

So who are you?  Really?
