Taiwan is one of East Asia’s most powerful and dynamic countries possessing many employment opportunities for foreigners. Careers in Taiwan’s most lucrative cities of Taipei, Kaohsiung, or Taichung, usually are in the areas of teaching English, IT, and Engineering.  However,with the right qualifications, expats can find opportunities in their field of expertise. Taiwan has many students working on their PhD, Bachelors’ and Masters’ degrees. This tiny island is esteemed for its feasible cost of living, an incredible health care system, safety, and its stable economy.

Teaching English

I’ll let you in on a top-secret destination that not many people consider when thinking of teaching English abroad. Most people don’t consider traveling abroad for a career in teaching, or when thinking of teaching in Asia, research careers in Japan, China, or South Korea. To become an English teacher in Taiwan a degree in Education is not required. Most schools only require a bachelors’ degree in any field, an American or British accent, and the confidence to teach young or adult students. Taiwan is a lesser-known jewel with high pay, low rent, high quality of living and very friendly locals. There’s so much Taiwan has to offer for expats.

Salary

The average salary for big- chain schools such as Hess, Kojen and Joy pay around $600.00NTD ($20.00 USD) per hour. These are known as “cram schools” or “buxibans” and children attend after school. Public schools pay more because they usually only hire a few English teachers salary ranges between $1000-1320NTD ($33-44 USD) per hour. International schools such as Taipei American School or Taipei European School offers wages up to 200,000 NTD/month ($6600 USD).

 IT Electronics & IT Engineering

Taiwan produces some of the biggest manufacturers of IT products in the world. Many Taiwanese IT companies have made a name for themselves abroad with creations like Foxconn for Apple, ASUS, Gigabyte, Acer and HTC just to name a few. There are thousands of IT companies of all sizes throughout Taiwan and to find a good career in IT & electronics it’s not necessary to work for the well-known ones. Most companies are located in the cities of Taipei, Hsinchu and Taoyuan. Salaries for IT and electronics can vary in Taiwan depending on education, experience and position.

Students

Many international students from all around the world come to Taiwan to study. Most students come to earn a degree in international business or to learn Mandarin Chinese and receive a bachelor’s degree in Chinese Language. Taiwan is a great place for students to come to study and there are tons of scholarship programs. Most scholarship will pay for all tuition cost, housing and give and monthly stipend of $25,000NT-$35,000NT($850-1,000USD)for personal needs. There are many degrees taught in English, including accounting, basic Chinese, international business, nursing and many more. Summer and short term programs are available as well. There are many respectable universities in Taiwan including National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, National Cheng Kung University.

Student Visa & Work Visa process

When a student is accepted into a school, the university will help to submit an application for residency. It usually only requires basic documents such as; passport, reference, and acceptance letter into the university. Any other documents the school will submit with the information required from the student. Work Visas require a little more documentation, but it is still a simple process. The Employer must apply for a work permit and after it is received the employee can apply for an Alien Residency Card(ARC).
