GOD IS! THE FOUNDATION OF SPIRITUALITY

GOD IS! THE FOUNDATION OF SPIRITUALITY

In the search for spirituality there is one undeniable fact, without God, a creator, there can be no spirituality. So we must answer the question, who or what is God. In the 70’s there were cartoons that addressed this question by the phrase “God is …” Through the use of the ellipses a reader would be afforded the opportunity to complete the statement as they felt appropriate. One of the ways people often completed this statement was “God is love”. You could make several statements that would help to gain an understanding of God, God is all-powerful, God is peace, God is just, God is a provider, God is a protector and so on and so forth. But, there are two aspects of God that will help us very much on our spiritual journey. These are God is our creator and God is spirit.

We often compare God to ourselves as humans when we talk about His hands, His face, His eyes and His ears. We even imply His nose when we reference His sense of smell. When we do this it’s called anthropomorphism. Simply stated it is assigning human attributes to God. However while these assignments assist us in understanding something about God, they confuse us about the nature of God. God is spirit. He is not physical as we are, He is not bound by the physical laws that we are, and to be scriptural, For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my ways your ways, saith the Lord. (Isaiah 55:8), said a little differently He doesn’t act or think like us. So as we seek spirituality we seek to be like God. We seek a peace like that of God; this means it surpasses a human understanding. We seek to have a love that is unconditional. We seek an inner joy that is not based on the events that happen around us, but by the fact that we are. In seeking to be like God our attributes resemble those of God, we are loving, we are forgiving, we are helpful, we are peaceful, and we are caring. This is all because we recognize that there is a creator, a God.

There is an ongoing argument as to whether there is a God or not. Therefore, you must personally answer the question of why you believe there is a God. The Bible assumes from the first verse until the last that there is a God; it does not attempt to prove that He exists. So your reasoning behind that belief is your own. Some arguments for the existence of God are the Moral Argument that states that everyone has an innate sense of right and wrong. Since people from all areas that have no relation to one another possess this understanding it must have been placed in us and as such it proves that we were created by something higher than us. Another Argument is the Teleological Argument that states order must be created. Since the universe and everything in it has a design to it then there must be a designer that created it all. While these are two of many arguments for the existence of God the one that matters most is the one that you believe.

EALON_MAGAZINE_July2015_vFinalPrintThe foundation of spirituality is not in the ellipses of “God is …” it is in the exclamation that “God is!” It is through this exclamation that we can seek spirituality higher than what
